This Thursday, we will be hosting a Spartan TweetUp at the International Center. The event will be used as a means for the MSU Community to raise money for the survivors in Haiti who have suffered from the terrible earthquake that has devastated their country. Each person who attends is being asked to make a meager donation of $5, and for every $5 they will be entered into a raffle to win various prizes donated from members of the Lansing, East Lansing, and MSU community. The donations will be given to the Red Cross, as part of a partnership with the MSU Caribbean Students Association.

When: Thursday, January 21 from 430-630

Where: International Center, MSU Campus

Why: Because it’s the right thing to do.

Please invite anyone you wish: this is not restricted to the MSU community, it’s not restricted to users of Twitter. It’s simply for people who feel like doing the right thing. Please visit the Facebook event for more info and to RSVP!

A number of community businesses have generously donated gift certificates and coupons. All these businesses use Twitter, and their accounts can be reached through their links below!

Owen Hall has been home to graduate students and a cafeteria for quite a while now. So long, in fact, that this summer it became evident that it was time for an upgrade….Well, after a whole summer of waiting, the new Riverwalk Market has opened at Owen Hall.

And the Spartan TweetUp will be there to see it on September 16, from 4-5 pm. All Faculty, Staff, Students, and Alums are welcome to attend…we only require positive attitudes, a twitter account or a curiosity about what the whole fuss is about, and a deep appreciation for all things MSU!

Please RSVP at our Facebook event, and remember to follow us @SpartanTweetUp for any updates!

Special thanks to Culinary Services for making this possible…remember: Eat At State.

Michigan State University is a large place. A very large place. A 5,200 acre place. Within this space, there are countless buildings, some new, some old. There are numerous programs, and a countless number of things to visit, many which most people who work and live at MSU know nothing about. Do you work at one of those places?

The major purpose of the SpartanTweetUp is for people who typically would not interact to meet each other, build relationships, and develop a community at MSU that otherwise would not exist. An important part of this is space. The better connected the MSU community is to the physical campus, and the resources that our University has to offer, the better students, educators, researchers, and administrators we can be. So, perhaps you have a new building, or a new program, or a great social space that is underutilized, and you want more people to visit or know about it…Hosting a TweetUp will allow a group of MSU people to visit your space, see what you are up to, and, hopefully, pass the word along to others.

So, if you are interested, please send us a DM on twitter. There are tons of places on campus that would be great for a TweetUp…so please let us know!

On August 4th, at 4 o’clock, the first ever Spartan TweetUp will be held at the MSU Union Dairy Store!

RSVP via our facebook invitation, and please pass the word through as many outlets as you’d like. Want a quick Twitter message to send along? Copy and paste:

Everyone who has a connection to the MSU community is welcome to attend. Hope to see you there!!

Welcome to the Spartan TweetUp blog! This space is reserved for discussion about the MSU Spartan TweetUp…to answer questions you may have and to announce when the TweetUps will be held. Unsure about what this term TweetUp means, why you should care, or what it’s for? Visit our FAQ page…

In the future, we hope that the Spartan TweetUp can be a one stop shop for new twitter users of the MSU community. New students, faculty, or staff will be able to find all the people who use Twitter at MSU, quickly network with them, and then have an opportunity a couple times a semester to meet them face to face, which is really the whole point of social networking in the first place.

The SpartanTweetUp is a little different then other local TweetUps, such as @MidMichTweetUp (which was the influence for us!). We are operating on a smaller scope, with the hope that we can bring together users of Twitter who are focused on using Twitter in the setting higher education. This could be for professional networking, student organizations, teaching, advertising campus events, or sharing research with the MSU Community. And, in the same way that MidMich chooses different places around MidMichigan to host TweetUps, we hope to hold the Spartan TweetUp at different places across campus, so that the MSU Community can discover places they may not have known about!

Please make sure you are following @SpartanTweetUp on Twitter, and check periodically for the new dates and locations!!
